Legion by Brandon Sanderson

04 Dec

Brandon Sanderson is a name I was not familiar with. I would have blissfully gone about my life without ever reading anything he wrote. That is until a colleague told me that I just had to read this short story called “Legion”.

I need to diverge from my main throughts here to point out to all aspiring writers. If you need to see what an effective hook looks like, read the opening lines of this story. Now, I don't profess to any particular literary skill, other than knowing what I like, and reading a lot, but this opening line had me, hook, line and sinker.

What can be more intriguing than talking to yourself, to get an expert opinnion and getting paid for it. Yeah. I know. How many times have I not talked to myself, out loud… embarrassing? Used to be. Now I can just shrug and mumble Legion, …. My precious.

Baggend aside, this short tale, for it is short packs a mighty punch. A small detective agency travels with Mr Leeds as he is engaged to recover a particularly valuable, and potential dangerous piece of technology. Mr Sanderson weaves a tale of suspense and intrigue that leads the reader from the home of Mr Leeds to the Promised land.

In the seeking of the technology more action and intrigue ensues. Multiple countries are seeking this same technology. Others are not scared to spill blood…. Will Mr Leeds succeed? You will need to read this to find out.

Suffice it to say I've already started on 'Legion: Skin Deep' and the first of the Mist Born series is lined up too.

Just hope I get some of my own writing done too.

Brandon Sanderson is now an author whose work I actively seek out.
